Subject: Donald Trump
It wasn't long ago that our free society damaged itself by interning Japanese Americans because they happened to look like the people who bombed Pearl Harbor. Today, history risks repeating itself. Peaceful, decent Muslim Americans are experiencing death threats, hate mail, and violence against their community because extremists have happened to hijack their religion and used it malignantly in the name of terror. In light of the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Donald Trump, a presidential front-runner, has even called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."
President Obama said it best when he cautioned us against this bigotry during his address to the nation last Sunday night. "We cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam," he said. "That, too, is what groups like ISIL want. ISIL does not speak for Islam. They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death, and they account for a tiny fraction of more than a billion Muslims around the world — including millions of patriotic Muslim Americans who reject their hateful ideology."
